Overview
Hardware was created as a part of the AU Type Foundry (AUTF) and served as one of its inaugural typefaces. Hardware was featured in the AUTF 2022 Exhibition: Digital Resurrections in Typography.
History
Hardware was derived from an American department store sign dating back to the early 1900s. Hand-painted by artist H.R. Garrabrant, the original hardware sign evoked a sense of dexterity through six carefully crafted letterforms.
Process
Hardware was designed under a system based on its source material. Reinvented for a modern audience, Hardware takes the bold personality of its predecessor and brings it to new mediums.
The original hardware sign featured six letters that use stroke weight and serifs to distill a hard-working personality within each character. The new Hardware combines heavy verticals, thin horizontals, and weighty serifs to create a typeface that is bold—yet not overbearing—and firm, yet not rigid.
